PICKING props
Props can be a wonderful way to elevate your session and highlight what makes you unique! Props can tell a story as to who you were during school. Picking props can be hard, however. Not all graduates want to utilize them and that's okay! If you are interested in using props, here are some ideas to consider:
alcohol (21+)/confetti
For those graduating from college and are above the age of 21, bring some champagne! Consider bringing two bottles just in case the first one malfunctions. Spraying champagne can add silliness to your photos.
We pick up what we leave, so I recommend purchasing biodegradable confetti. Like champagne, confetti can elevate the celebratory feeling of your images. This is a great alternative for champagne if you're under 21. You can also bring balloons with the year you are graduating.
School memorabilia
Consider bringing a college shirt, flag, or merch from either the school you attended and/or the one you plan on attending soon. Here are some major-related prop ideas:
STEM: Microscope; calculator.
Health and Medicine: Stethoscope; beaker, needle/syringe.
Business: Calculator; business book.
Social Sciences: Globe; history book.
Public and Human Services: DSM-V/diagnosing manual; handcuffs; firefighting gear; paramedic uniform.
Trades: Drill; safety goggles; gloves; toolbox.
animals
I am a major animal lover and love any chance I get to photograph them. (My dogs are my forever models.) If you have a furry friend, whether that be a dog, cat, hamster, horse, or anything in between, I welcome it! We can discuss this when booking your session.
As a gentle reminder: You will be solely responsible for your animal the day of the session, including but not limited to: Picking up after your animal, ensuring they are permitted at the session location, leashing them, etc.
hobbies
Hobby props are another way to capture your unique personality. Some props to consider are:
Physical activities: Running shoes; skateboard; roller skates; cleats; power tools.
Arts: Book; canvas/paint brush; clay; camera; crochet/knitting supplies.
Misc: Car; spatula/apron/cooking utensils; video game controller; board/card games; telescope.
art/sports memorabilia
Did you play a sport in school? Maybe you were a musician or attended an art club. If you want to capture your experience in props, here are some to consider:
Sports: Cleats; jersey; bat; racket; ball; pom-poms; trophy; dance shoes.
Art: Canvas; formerly created art piece (e.g., a sculpture); camera; paint brushes/palette; clay; smock.
Music: Music sheet; instrument; microphone.
